Digital Rights Management (DRM)

IARC relies on publications revenues to sustain the production of its books and must therefore take measures to protect its copyrighted materials.

IARC's e-bookshop applies two types of DRM (digital rights management): Social watermarking, and Adobe DRM. Social watermarking embeds in the e-book visible and hidden watermarks that contain the purchaser's contact information.

WHO Classification of Tumours series e-books (PDF and EPUB) are copyright-protected with industry-standard Adobe Digital Rights Management (DRM). They are readable with Adobe Digital Editions for PC and Mac, or using Adobe DRM-compatible programs on most mobile devices except for Kindle. See the full list of Adobe Digital Editions supported devices.

When you click on the download link after purchase, you will initially see an .acsm file. The .acsm file is not the ebook itself; it is a "wrapper" that manages the permissions for accessing the PDF or EPUB file you have purchased.

If this is your first time purchasing an Adobe DRM-protected ebook, please follow these steps:

  1. Obtain an Adobe ID at: https://accounts.adobe.com/. Downloading an e-book without first setting up an Adobe account may result in loss of the e-book. It is highly recommended that you create an Adobe ID if you do not already have one.
  2. Download Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) software from: http://www.adobe.com/solutions/ebook/digital-editions/download.html
  3. After installing ADE, authorize your computer by providing your Adobe ID and password. You will find the option to authorize under the Help menu.
  4. Once you have created an Adobe ID, installed ADE, and authorized your computer, you are ready to begin downloading your e-book.
  5. Go to your order confirmation email from the IARC E-Bookshop and click on the download link to retrieve and save the .acsm file
  6. In ADE, go to the File menu, and select "Add to Library". Find and select the .acsm file. ADE will automatically begin to download the e-book. This may take a few moments; thanks for your patience.

  2. From the app store (iOS devices) or Google Play (Android devices), download a free, Adobe DRM-compatible reading app such as Aldiko or Bluefire.
  3. After installing Aldiko or Bluefire, authorize your device by providing your Adobe ID and password. In Bluefire, you will automatically be prompted for your Adobe ID and password after downloading the app. In Aldiko, go to your Profile, then Settings, and then DRM Accounts to enter your Adobe ID and password.
  4. Once you have created an Adobe ID, installed an Adobe DRM-compatible reading app, and authorized your device, you are ready to begin downloading your e-book.
  5. From your device, go to your order confirmation email from the IARC E-Bookshop and click on the download link to retrieve the .acsm file.
  6. You will automatically be prompted to open the file using an app. Click on the "Open In" link and select the appropriate link to begin downloading, either "Copy to Bluefire" or "Copy to Aldiko". This may take a few moments; thanks for your patience.

Bluefire and Aldiko are not cloud-based, i.e. if you have downloaded your e-book on a device, the title will only be saved on this one device and will not be synced across Aldiko apps on other devices. Therefore, we highly recommend backing up your e-books by saving them on your computer, following the instructions in the section above (for PC or Mac).
